2011 In Review

Here's a little recap of how 2011 went and what made it so awesome:
I started off 2011 at home with my family on Palmito Ranch. D had been deployed in the Philippines for about four months at this point so I was missing him, but happy to be spending the holidays in Texas with my family.

In 2011 a friend of mine came up with the idea of suing the State of Hawaii for failing to recognize our right to bear arms and started the "Hawaii Defense Foundation" to accomplish this goal. I am a director and secretary of the organization and we just received our 501(c)3 non-profit status last month (which means your donations are tax deductible!) ;-)
During my Spring Break I was lucky enough to visit D in the Philippines. It had been almost six months since I had seen him. We stayed in Manila for a couple of days and Boracay for the rest. It was perfect.

As president of The William S. Richardson School of Law's Federalist Society, I had the opportunity to meet several legal celebrities, including Supreme Court Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas (for the second time) and Representative Michelle Bachman. Pretty neat!

D finally returned home from deployment in June. I was so happy to have him back.

The weekend after D returned from deployment, we took a mini-vacation to the Big Island to celebrate our 5th Anniversary. We stayed at a fancy resort (Hilton Waikaloa Village), visited a bunch of cool spots (South Point, Waipio Valley, Akaka Falls, Mauna Kea Observatory), and went on a night dive with Manta Rays. It was so much fun!

About one month after D got back from deployment (on Independence Day) we were happily surprised to learn we were expecting our first baby! Coincidentally we were flying down to Texas for Daniel's 10 year reunion the following weekend so we were able to share the good news with our families in person.

Right before school started back up in August my mama and my little brother Diego came to visit me in Hawaii.  It was so nice to have them. I wish Hawaii was in Texas.

I decided that I didn't want to keep bleaching my hair while pregnant so I decided to go back to my roots.  I'm still getting used to it and I don't like it all that much but it's for the best I guess. I'll be back, blonde!
When I'm not doing school work D & I try to spend as much time outdoors as possible. Since I can't surf anymore this usually consisted of me taking pictures of him from the beach, but I also have been able to do more fun things like take rides on the boat. D got his boater's license and we occasionally go fishing and hang out at the sandbar.

On October 28 we found out we are having a baby GIRL! <3
In November we decided that we should move closer to town where I go to school so I don't have to drive an hour there everyday when my belly is huge and I might go into labor at a moment's notice. I miss the East Side and my favorite neighbor Anna, but it's nice to live in an actual house with a huge backyard instead of just a townhouse.

December marked 2.5 years of law school down and only .5 more to go!

After finals were over I flew to Texas and had my Baby Shower. I still haven't had a chance to post about it but I will soon, I promise!

And last but not least... my belly has stretched to astronomical proportions... and I still have 2 months to go!!
Overall, it has been one amazing year and I feel very blessed to have lived through it. God willing, next year will be even better.

Things I'm Looking Forward to in 2012:
-Finally meeting my baby girl in March!
-Graduating law school in May
-Taking the bar in July
-Possibly being stationed somewhere else
-A whole year with my love, NO DEPLOYMENTS!
-Maybe being able to visit Texas more since I'll be done with school.
-Surfing & doing other things I love as well as getting back to my pre-pregnancy weight after Eva is born!

Dear Baby Eva,

Tomorrow is my mother's mother's (your great-grandmother's) birthday.  Hilda May Rook (now Hobbs) was born in Camberwell, London.  I've always called her "Granny Hobbs."
She grew up on 6 Ivanhoe Road, where her brother Mike still lives.  I stayed in that same townhouse when I visited him in London when I was 17.  You can see it in the background of the picture below:
Granny Hobbs has lived in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada since I was a baby, so I didn't get to spend all that much time with her growing up.  She did visit Texas quite a bit, though, and I visited Canada almost every year.  I used to stay at her apartment and we would have lots of fun together.  She had a pet ferret for a while that was a riot.  She loves books and we would walk to the bookstore and browse.  She also swims almost every day and she would take me to this big natatorium called "The Lawson" where we would spend a couple of hours.  Another thing that comes to mind when I think of Granny Hobbs is tea.  Maybe it's just a stereotypical British thing but she's always drinking tea.  Here are a bunch of pictures of her in England when she was younger:

Baby Eva, you will be Granny's first great-grandchild. We are planning a trip to Canada after you are born so that you can meet her.  It's been about 7 years since I've seen her so I can't wait!

Merry Christmas!

This is the second Christmas in a row without my hubby. :-(
He was supposed to arrive last night but he was put on a "Meritorious Promotion" board and he had to change his plane ticket so that he can be in Hawaii for his interview on the 30th. You can read more about what that is here, if you are interested, but basically he has a chance of getting promoted to Gunnery Sergeant way before he would normally be scheduled to.  He is competing against a bunch of other outstanding Marines so there's no guarantee he'll be promoted, and prayers are welcome! It would be such a wonderful Christmas gift for our family. Unfortunately, it will be another week before I get to see him again. At least I'll have him to kiss on New Year's this year (assuming I can stay up that late!).

Still, I'm grateful to have spent Christmas with my wonderful family. Here are some pictures from Christmas eve at Palmito Ranch:
Daddy, D.J., Me, Steph, Ryan, and Maria
My little brother D.J. is going to be an uncle! Betty Ann managed to stick a tamale in this picture.

Matching two of my beautiful primas as a brunette.

My Daddy carving the fried turkey.
Mamo & my belly.

So Christmas Eve was spent with my Dad's side of the family out at the ranch. Today my mom, Diego, and John went to spend Christmas afternoon with my hubby's side of the family in Harlingen. Afterwards I went to Bayview to spend some time with Maria's side of the family. I don't have pictures from today yet but I'll post some as soon as I get them. Now I'm at my mom's house watching "Midnight in Paris" with her. I had a pretty good day despite Daniel not being here. I soooo wish he was though.

It's pretty crazy to think that next Christmas we'll have a little baby crawling (and probably even walking) around getting into everything. Christmas will probably be completely different from now on. I can't wait! I love my growing family so much. ♥

29 Weeks

Size of baby:  2.5-3lbs and around 17 inches- About the size of a Butternut Squash

Symptoms: A little heartburn. Not too bad. Oh, and peeing a zillion times a day.

Fetal Movement: She's moving a lot more this week. The movements feel a bit different, though. There are less hard kicks and more sludging, turning movements. When I sleep on my side she kicks the bed with her belly. She moves so much at night that sometimes the kicks are incorporated into my dreams.

Sleep: Better this week, although I miss my hubby who won't get to Texas until New Year's Eve.

Cravings: None... Maybe because I'm eating all the food I love!

Aversions: None of those either, really.

Best Moment this Week: Well, my baby shower was pretty awesome. I received a lot of wonderful gifts for baby Eva. And last night we celebrated Christmas eve with my Dad's side of the family. It was so much fun.

What I Look Forward To: Being reunited with D on Saturday! Also, I was able to schedule my Labor & Delivery Hospital Tour and Childbirth Classes for when I get back to Hawaii. I'm pretty excited about that.

A Very Special Gift

I seriously thought that Christmas break would mean more time to blog, but I was mistaken! I've really been on-the-go since I arrived in Texas a week ago. My baby shower went great, and I really want to post about that but I'm waiting until I can compile the pictures from the different cameras that were there. I don't really have many on mine. Still, I received one very special gift that I simply must post about.

The gift was from my Mamo. The first thing she gave me was the tiny ring she wore when she was a baby. The second was the letters from the bracelet they gave my Daddy at the hospital when he was a baby to identify him. The third was a set of baby silverware she used to feed her babies with. I'm a sucker for sentimental things like these, so needless to say they were perfect. Here are some pictures:

Maybe one day I'll be able to pass them on to my first granddaughter when she's having a baby of her own. Until then, I'll treasure them very dearly.

28 Weeks

Size of baby: 2.5-3lbs and 17 inches- About the size of a Chinese cabbage

Symptoms: The heartburn was pretty much nonexistent this week but after that 8 hour plane ride my back has been destroyed for the past 3 days.

Fetal Movement: lots and lots! love it!

Sleep: between the jet lag and sleeping in different beds, not so good.

Maternity Clothes: Shopping for maternity clothes was a bust. Maybe my belly isn't big enough for maternity clothes yet but it all looks terrible on me. I'll just stick to the same few outfits that still fit me for now I guess.

Cravings: Well I'm finally getting my fill of Mexican food!

Best Moment of This Week: Getting to Texas and spending time with family!

27 Weeks

Size of baby: 2.5lbs and 16 inches- about the size of a head of cauliflower

Symptoms: I've had pretty uncomfortable heartburn this week, and lots of backaches.

Fetal Movement: lots of kicking and turning... and hiccups! :-) Before I would only really feel it at night but now I feel it throughout the day too.

Sleep: I still get up a couple of times a night to pee. I guess that never really changed throughout the pregnancy. It's still difficult to get comfortable at night. One thing I really don't mind is Eva kicking away. In fact I really can't relax until I feel a few jabs to let me know she's okay.

Maternity Clothes: None yet (except for that shirt I wore on Halloween). My skate jeans still button but not my skinny jeans. Today I will be shopping for my first maternity clothes so that I'll have stuff to wear in Texas.

Cravings: Nothing, really. I've been eating lots of peanut butter though.

Aversions: Nothing stands out this week

Best Moment This Week: Oh man! Where do I begin? Was it feeling baby Eva's hiccups for the first time? Or was it crossing over to my Third Trimester & 7th Month of Pregnancy? This was a pretty good week for pregnancy.

What I Look Forward To: This time next week I'll be making this post from TEXAS right before getting ready for my BABY SHOWER! Eeeeeeeee!

What I Miss: SURFING!!!! Yesterday, after watching the Pipe Masters, we went to my favorite break (North Beach) because D and Nick wanted to surf. It was pretty windy and junky but I would have had so much fun anyway. It's one thing having to watch D surf at a bunch of other breaks, but when he surfs my favorite one I'll admit I get a little bummed.

2nd Trimester Recap

Today is the first day of my 3rd Trimester!

During My 2nd Trimester:
  • I found out that my sweet little baby is a GIRL!
  • I felt my baby tapping then squirming then kicking then break dancing!
  • I felt my baby hiccuping.
  • I did a little too much shopping!
  • Baby Eva began receiving her first gifts from her family and friends who live far away.
  • My belly grew exponentially.

Besides the occasional heartburn and frequent backaches, I have felt pretty darn good throughout my second trimester. I still jog three miles almost every day and lift weights three or four days a week. Today I took my last final for the semester, which means I'm only one semester away from graduating law school.

I can't believe I only have 3 more months until I meet my sweet baby girl. When I get back from Texas in January I'll start taking childbirth classes and decorating Eva's nursery. I can't wait!

For all the inconveniences pregnancy creates, it is truly an amazing experience. Every time I feel Eva moving around it makes me smile so big and feel extraordinarily excited. I'm already so in love with her.

I hope my last trimester of pregnancy is as great as the first two were!

So I just had to share that I felt my baby hiccuping for the first time the other day! I wanted to do a little research and make sure that's really what it was before I shared, and sure enough, it was! Apparently babies get them sometimes while they are practicing breathing. It almost felt like kicking, but a little lighter and perfectly rhythmic. You could probably set a watch to the intervals- that's how I knew it wasn't just ordinary movement. It was early in the morning and D was in the bathroom brushing his teeth so I called him over and he got to feel it as well. So very special. ♥ I can't wait til we get to hear her cute little hiccups too.

26 Weeks

Our house matches my hair and is still messy from moving in!

Size of baby: almost 14 inches and a little over 2 pounds

Symptoms: backaches, footaches, a little swelling... ugh! Other than that, everything has been great!

Fetal Movement: She gets stronger and more wiggly by the day!

Cravings: Dried Mangos!

Aversions: I keep thinking I want Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream but it just doesn't taste right to me. I can't wait to get down to Texas and eat some Blue Bell.

Best Moment This Week: I'm starting to receive gifts from my registry so that's really exciting! So far I've received a musical turtle toy & taggie blanket from my dad's cousin, a bunch of children's books from a friend-of-family/my 5th grade teacher, and a baby bath from another one of my second cousins.

What I Look Forward To: 10 DAYS TIL TEXAS!!! I can't wait to go home and spend the holidays with my family and friends. But first I must get through finals... (which is why I haven't been posting much lately)

Found some time to go through some of our recent baby buys and plan some outfits for baby Eva. =)

And here's what she'll wear when she visits My Daddy:
