Because we'll be moving overseas in a few months, we started selling some of our furniture. One of the first things we ended up selling is our couch. I'll have to admit, as sick as I was of that old couch, it was a bit hard to see it go. Daniel calls me a pack rat. I keep a bunch of random things like movie tickets and boarding passes. I plan on putting them in a scrapbook but I haven't had time to work on it since before law school. In reality, I think I would be a hoarder if I lacked just an ounce more of ration. I wouldn't be one of those fire-hazard, dead-cats kind of hoarder, though. I'm way too organized. But like some hoarders, I can attach a memory to pretty much anything and then want to keep it forever. When I think about it, that's probably one of the biggest reasons I blog.
To hoard my memories.
The couch was a wedding present from Daniel's mom back in 2006. We got it at the J.C. Pennys in Carlsbad. I remember that day vividly. Our friend Dustin was visiting from Van Nuys and Daniel's mom from Texas. We went to the mall to try out couches and were pretty shocked as to how comfortable this couch was compared to the rest of them. I absolutely hated the color. I'm not big on beige/brown when it comes to home decor. Pretty much everything in our living room is black. I love heels, and I'm usually able to sacrifice some comfort for aesthetics, but this was a level of comfort that could not be sacrificed.
Besides hearing me complain endlessly about wanting a new couch, this couch has seen a lot. It has lived in 4 different cities, including 6 different houses and 2 different storage facilities. It has seen almost our entire marriage and the birth of our first child. It has been surfed on by family and friends from all over the world. Countless hours of studying and vegging have been done on it. Everything from spaghetti sauce to tears have been split on it.
It has seen six years of me trying to pretend that I'm not falling asleep during movie nights with D (give or take a few deployments).
It was a good couch, but I'm glad we finally retired it. It was ready.
Here's to my old couch!
