Throwback Thursday: Tortuga

While studying abroad in the Galapagos we took a short boat ride to Isla Tortuga to see the frigate birds mating. I didn't have a camera nice enough to get any good pictures of them, but here's what they looked like:
The island was speckled with dots of red from these birds. It was pretty awesome. We also snorkeled off the island. We saw a few reef shark, lobitos, and other cool critters. Here are a few pics from that day:
We were greeted by this little guy upon returning to Isabela.

a peek... living room edition

I was strongly advised not to post a home-tour while living here in Tanzania (break-ins are extremely common);
but I wanted to share some "bits and pieces" of our living room...
Most of our decor is from back home (or right across the border in Mexico). I'll share some peeks of our other rooms eventually. :)

Treasures from Madagascar

My husband just returned from Madagascar. He was there for last-minute work, and I couldn't tag along. I was so incredibly jealous. He tried to make up for it by bringing me back some pretty awesome things. They just wanted to make me visit even more...
I thought this was pretty.
These are cloth napkins for baby Eva's mealtime messes.
This is a puzzle box. There are secret things you have to push in order to open it. I didn't know this, and almost broke it out of frustration.
Here's another one.
Aren't these carvings beautiful?
D also managed to find some shoes for Eva that she actually can't take off! No more barefoot baby on hot ground.
One day, Madagascar. One day.

Thinking About: Traveling. Sometimes I feel trapped on this little peninsula I live on. I can't wait for my truck to get here so that we can go on safari. I'm dying to see some elephants and other critters. All that stuff is only a couple of hours away from me, but I don't have a means of getting there yet! (without spending hundreds of dollars, that is). I'm also planning a little trip back to Texas soon. I'm so excited to see friends and family!

Looking Forward To: Eva's first birthday! It's only a couple of weeks away. I've been planning her baby luau. We're going to try and make it feel like we're back in Hawaii as much as possible. I'll be making lei with the plumeria from our yard while D and our Tahitian friend roast a pig! In fact, today we're getting together for a mock food run.

Making Me Happy: My one and only girlfriend here, Cho. Even though she's leaving me soon. :( Some of the other girls who are stationed overseas that I've talked to haven't made any friends yet, so it really makes me appreciate her. :) Fun fact: her name means toilet in Swahili! hah. Last night her mom hosted an Asian-themed party and made us a bunch of yummy food. We had loads of fun singing karaoke.

Learning: Swahili! But I already wrote about that. :)

Listening To: Tan Vampires, thanks to Dani. A little more hipster than my usual bands, but I like them. ;)

Also, a lot of Prolyphic lately:

Watching: A great movie I've seen recently is Argo. It was interesting seeing embassy life portrayed on film. A movie that recently disappointed me is Mama. Normally I like Guillermo del Toro films, but that one was kind of dumb.

Reading: Still working on The Fountainhead, but also reading baby books again. My mom sent me What to Expect in the Second Year, and I've been reading sections of old books that didn't really pertain to us until now. Bring on toddlerhood! :)

Eva: Week 50

This week you learned a new word: "hot!" You say it when you're walking barefoot outside and you hit a hot patch of ground. You are getting better at climbing, and you now pull a pillow down from the couch to use it as a stool to climb up. You love opening and closing cabinets and drawers, and the child-proofing stuff we ordered couldn't come soon enough. You can feed yourself an entire egg in the morning, which seems to be your favorite meal these days. You'll be turning one in just two weeks, and I still can't believe it.

Throwback Thursday: Crystal Cove

Crystal Cove is a little island off the coast of Boracay. It was one of my favorite places I visited in the Philippines. While on the island, I felt like I was in some section of Disney World... everything just seemed so unreal (this seems to be a reoccurring theme of a lot of places I visited in the Philippines, I guess). It rained on us the whole time, and the swells were too big to venture into the sea caves (the whole reason many people visit the island in the first place), but I loved it anyway. I remember standing on one of the cliffs of the island and being pelted with the ocean spray. We were some of the only people there that day, which made it even more special. I couldn't get many pictures (because of the rain), but here are a few from our adventure...

One of the caves... tide was too high and swell was too big. :(
